Fuel Costs Ground Profits Despite Record Sales Surge at American Airlines

October 22, 2026 • 2 min read

American Airlines is facing a difficult financial paradox where record breaking revenue is being completely erased by the soaring cost of jet fuel. On Thursday, the company warned investors that it expects to post a deeper loss for the year, forecasting an adjusted loss between one and one dollar and sixty cents per share. This represents a significant downward revision from July projections, sending the airline’s stock sliding roughly four percent in early trading.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Isom highlighted that while the carrier achieved the strongest year over year revenue growth of his career thanks to high demand for premium seating, these gains were overshadowed by external pressures. A geopolitical crisis involving Iran has sent fuel prices skyrocketing, adding billions in expenses across the aviation sector. For American specifically, its quarterly fuel bill surged nearly sixty eight percent to reach more than four point six billion dollars.

This struggle is not unique to American, as it becomes the fourth major domestic carrier to slash its outlook this month following similar moves by Delta, United, and Southwest. To combat these rising operational costs, passengers are feeling the pinch through ticket prices that have climbed more than twenty percent since last year. In response to the volatile economic climate, American plans to scale back its capacity growth heading into next year.

Internal pressure is mounting for Isom to bridge the profit gap between American and its more lucrative rivals like Delta and United. The company has attempted to pivot toward luxury travelers by renovating cabins and building new lounges, accompanied by a series of leadership changes within its commercial and operations teams. Despite reporting third quarter revenue of sixteen point three four billion dollars—beating Wall Street expectations—the compañía still ended the period with a net loss of two hundred sixty nine million dollars.
