Trey Yesavage doesn't last an inning in rehab start with triple-A Buffalo

The Toronto Blue Jays right-hander didn’t last a full inning as he made a start with triple-A Buffalo.

Yesavage lasted 0.2 innings, giving up two hits and two runs, one of them earned, against the Rochester Red Wings.

In total, the 23-year-old went through 34 pitches before he was replaced by Yondrei Rojas. That number is in line with the number of pitches manager John Schneider said Yesavage would throw when speaking to reporters earlier this week.

According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Yesavage averaged 93.3 m.p.h. with his fastball, topping out at 94.4 m.p.h. That’s in line with his average in the majors this season, which is 94.3 m.p.h according to Baseball Savant.

Yesavage hasn’t pitched in the majors since Aug. 4, when he suffered a meniscus injury against the Houston Astros. Yesavage’s knee appeared to buckle as he warmed up for the third inning and he was eventually removed from the game. He later underwent surgery to repair knee cartilage on Sept. 4.

Yesavage worked off the mound for the first time last week during a simulated game, throwing 30 pitches, with his fastball topping out at 93 m.p.h.

Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi projected Yesavage could return to the Blue Jays on Monday against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays sit just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final wild-card spot entering Tuesday’s action.

Toronto continues its series with the Detroit Tigers Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
